The pair of struggling welterweights have been amongst the upper echelon of the division for a number of years now, however recent results have dropped their stock exponentially. The 37-year-old Koscheck had picked up two impressive wins since he failed to dethrone former champion Georges St-Pierre, but it has been a constant struggle since he lost to the current champion Johny Hendricks.
Kos has now dropped three successive losses including two brutal first-round knockouts at the hands of Tyron Woodley and current title challenger Robbie Lawler.
It will be Koscheck's first time stepping into the cage in five months, whereas the 29-year-old Ellenberger will be making a return since picking up his third defeat on the bounce at UFC 180 against Kelvin Gastelum.
'The Juggernaut' was edging extremely close to a title shot after putting together an 8-2 run against some top contenders, however things have declined rapidly since his setback against Rory MacDonald. A TKO defeat against Lawler followed by a disappointing display against Gastelum has left Ellenberger in a tough spot in the division.
Both men will be desperate to get back to winning ways and with the addition of this bout, UFC 184 now includes:
Chris Weidman (c) vs. Vitor Belfort
Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Cat Zingano
Frank Mir vs. Antonio Silva
Yoel Romero vs. Ronaldo Souza
Jake Ellenberger vs. Josh Koscheck
Roman Salazar vs. Norifumi Yamamoto
