Up start promotion Macto have been causing waves this week in UK MMA with the announcement of their debut, June 27th show. But what is Macto Championships all about, and what is it that has got everyone one in the know buzzing? We take a look at who Macto Championships are and who's fighting on their debut card. We also give our views on Macto and breakdown if they have the potential to succeed.
Who are these Guys Macto Championships?
Macto Championships are an evolution of the highly successful Too Much Talent (TMT) promotion set up by TMT's James Lutman who serves as Macto matchmaker, Impact LPA's Ross Laurence, and partners, Wad Alameddine and Chris Emmanuel. The promotion aims to take the TMT ethos of 'doing it better' and take things to the next level, potentially capitalising on a gap in the market left by Cage Warriors.
Aligned with the IMMAF and Safe MMA, Macto aims to do three events this year, followed by six in 2016, and with the connections Ross has through Impact LPA, expect some big name signings forth coming throughout the year.
Tell me about their first event.
As with all of their events, Macto Championships 1 will feature both amateur and professional MMA bouts as well as K-1 fights. Former UFC welterweight Nick Osipczak will serve as the promotions main event taking on Wendle Lewis, a fighter who has previously fought for BAMMA.
The co-main event will see 7-1 Alex Montagnani fight the always exciting David Round. A towering welterweight at 6'3" Montagnani has 6 knockout victories to his name whilst 13-12 David Round has finished 12 of his 13 wins inside the distance through strikes.
Both Montagnani and Osipczak represent a huge coup for the start out promotion with both men more than capable of commanding fights on larger promotions such as BAMMA. Macto have done well to attract both men thanks to none exclusive fight contracts allowing both men to fight elsewhere after Macto Championship 1.
Also announced for the promotions debut card is a K-1 bout between Frasier Opie and Louis King, with more fights to be announced, including international talent over the forth coming weeks.
Tell me more about the Main Event?
The Main Event sees the return of former UFC welterweight Nick Osipczak (5-3) who returns to MMA after retiring nearly 5 years ago. A contestant on Season 9 of the Ultimate Fighter, Osipczak went 2-3 in his UFC career but impressed whilst there, defeating Frank Lester by submission, and Matt Riddle by TKO, while 2 of his losses came by ridiculously close and somewhat controversial split decisions to top competition in Rick Story and Duane Ludwig. A Champion in the UK National Open Weight Kung Fu Championship, Osipczak's incredible striking can be seen on display in an incredible 8 second headkick knockout victory over Mark Miller in the TUF 9 house.
His opponent, 6-2 Londoner Wendle Lewis enters the bout at Macto Championships hoping to bounce back from defeat at Bamma 14 to Leon Edwards. A 4-fight UCMMA vet, Lewis has finished 4 of his 6 victories - 3 by TKO / KO's, 1 by submission, and has previously trained with the likes of Jason Young, and Brad Pickett at Team Titan. A solid striker, Lewis will be the underdog in the fight but definitely has the skill set to cause a potential upset, it also represents an interesting test for Osipczak as he dips his feet back into the world of MMA after being away for so long.
Where and when does Macto Championships 1 take place?
Macto Championships 1 takes place June, 27 at ArenaMK, Milton Keynes. Tickets start from £30 and are available Here
Kingdom MMA's view.
Macto certainly are an interesting addition to UK MMA, and have the potential to fill a void many believe to be left by Cage Warriors. Macto matchmaker James Lutman has already put together a stellar fight card, and the additions of Montagnani and Osipczak show the promotions intention to make a huge statement on the scene.
Non exclusive contracts, and ties with IMMAF and Safe MMA make Macto an attractive prospect for fighters and with strong connections to some of the finest fighters in the UK via Impact LPA, Macto has the potential to attract some big names on the UK scene.
Macto Championships 1 is already a ridiculously stacked card worthy of attention, however we have seen upstart promotions put on stacked fight cards in the past never to be seen again - most recently Europe MMA. That said, I feel Macto have a solid set of business minds behind them and are building something that has the potential to do really well. It won't be easy with the likes of Warrior Fight Series and Shinobi fighting for a similar position in the market but Macto have all the makings of a great promotion. Expect big things.
