UFC 181 Prelims Review: Pennington vs Evans-Smith

Raquel Pennington chokes out Evans-Smith to open the UFC 181 Prelims

by Ben Heather @benheather

Opening up the UFC 181 Prelims was a women's bantamweight battle between Raquel Pennington and Ashlee Evans-Smith. Originally this was supposed to be the fight where Holly Holm would make her UFC debut and Evans Smith stepped in on short notice to take this fight, to make her Octagon debut.

Evans-Smith starts by controlling the fight with Pennington pressed against the cage before pulling her down to the ground where she jumps in to guard, nothing comes from this and both women return to the feet. As they return to the feet Evans-Smith lands a big knee which opens up the forehead of Pennington.

Evans-Smith is doing a good job of controlling this fight and proving why she was given the shot at Pennington on short notice.

Pennington manages to manoeuvre round on the cage and takes the back of Evans-Smith and uses this position to get a takedown. As both women scramble to get back to there feet Pennington grabs hold of Evans-Smiths neck and locks in a bulldog choke, taking her back to the ground in the process. It doesn't look like Pennington will have the time to finish the choke before the end of the round but just as the ref stepped in as the round finishes Evans-Smith face plants the canvas and is out cold. It's all over.

A good finish from Pennington especially as she had been controlled on the cage for most of the round.

Official Decision: Raquel Pennington def. Ashlee Evans-Smith via Bulldog Choke Round 1, 4:59
