Cathal Pendred and Paddy Holohan have been added to the UFC Fight Night Boston card on January 18th which is to be headlined by SBG team mate Conor McGregor.
Boston born Pendred will take on American Sean Spencer in a three round welterweight bout. Both Pendred and Spencer go into the fight on the back of wins over Russia’s Gasan Umalatov and Brazil’s Paulo Thiago respectively and both fighters will be looking to continue their winning streak in Boston.
On accepting the fight, Pendred said:
"Boston is my birth place; my parents were working in Boston when I was born in '87 and I lived there until I was four.
“This is a dream come true. I haven't been back since I left and to be making my return there to fight in the UFC, it's like something out of a movie.
“The people of Boston won't need to adopt me, I am one of them. The city is in rich in Irish heritage. Nearly every person from Boston has some sort of Irish roots.”
With three Irish fighters, as well as Northern Ireland’s Norman “Stormin” Parke, now confirmed for the UFC event in Boston, it is anticipated that Irish and Northern Irish fans will travel their in thousands to show their support for their home country heroes.
“This will be like UFC Dublin part two.” said Pendred.
“I can see 3,000 or 4,000 people flying over from Dublin to this event. The rest will be made up mainly of people from Boston who are Irish-Americans. That Irish passion will be present in the crowd just like in July, except there will be twice as many in attendance.”
And Pendred plans to put in a show stopping performance on the night in front of his home fans.
“I don’t really know much about Sean Spencer, and I don't really care. I'm going over there to make a statement and put on a performance for everyone."
Paddy “The Hooligan” Holohan will take on American veteran Shane Howell in what is set to be an exciting flyweight match up.
Holohan will be looking to get back in the win column following his unanimous decision loss last month in Halifax, Canada against Chris Kelades.
On accepting the fight, Holohan said:
“I’m so happy to be a part of the UFC card in Boston. We are going to recreate the same atmosphere we had in Dublin; it’ll be Dublin in Boston.”
“As I always say to the fans, I’m one of them and I know with the Boston crowd it will be the same, like home away from home. I know I’m the job to start that party over in Boston.”
On his opponent, Shane Howell, Holohan said:
“I’ve seen a bit about him, his record suggests that he’s been around and I can’t wait to have a knock around with him.
“I don’t really do early predictions but I’m coming to finish this guy.”
UFC FIGHT NIGHT: MCGREGOR vs. SIVER also features Northern Ireland’s Norman “Stormin” Parke, who will face off against 13th ranked lightweight Jorge Masvidal. Parke will be hoping that his presence, together with that of McGregor and Holohan on this Boston card, will encourage fans from Ireland and Northern Ireland to make the journey overseas to watch what is set to be an unforgettable live evening of fighting entertainment.
