So the biggest card in 2014 is upon us as UFC 178 takes place in Las Vegas and I'm here to give you some useful pointers on a few bets I like. As huge as this card is I have found it very hard to get many good looking bets as the match ups are all close and some of the odds are not great but I will give you the usual Parlay, a high paying Method of victory treble and a few method of victory bets to keep an eye on.
Bet 1
Cat Zingano 4/11
Donald Cerrone 9/10
Jon Tuck 13/8
John Howard 4/9
Conor McGregor 1/3
Stake-£5 Returns- £65
So here is my Parlay bet for this week, it's strong but would still be looking for a few tough match ups to go our way. First up I have chosen the returning Cat Zingano who returns to the octagon after a horrific 18 months in which she went through injury and personal issues, but as she returns she finds a tough Brazilian in Amanda Nunes stood across the cage. Zingano is an all around better fighter who has power in her hands and particularly her knees as she showed against Miesha Tate in her last encounter along with solid strikes from the clinch and is also very good on the ground, Cat should get the win here.
Next up is the UFC's most active fighter Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone as he faces perhaps the best fighter who was fighting outside the UFC in former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. Now this fight is a toss up here and I admit I went back and forth all week regarding who will win and I have committed myself to picking Cerrone even though I'm not 100% confident but why I chose the Cowboy is his overall octagon experience which I think will be key to victory here. Cerrone's kickboxing is second to none and I feel he could catch Alvarez as he attempts to go for a takedown and as he is ducking down that is a prime height for Cerrone to unload his deadly head kick but this fight could go either way and both guys are priced at the same so if you fancy Eddie put him instead.
I was very surprised to see Jon Tuck come out as the underdog in his fight with Kevin Lee, yes Lee has the very clear wrestling advantage but personally I feel he is a little undersized for the division and Tuck is extremely quick on his feet and is difficult to takedown, along with some great offensive Ju-Jitsu. Lee may not want to go there and I can see Tuck taking the decision.
In a match up with two veterans of the sport I have taken John Howard to beat the unpredictable Brian Ebersole. There really isn't too much between these two but I feel that Howard is going to catch Ebersole with a punch that will throw Ebersole off his game and he can go on to get a decision victory.
Last but no means least is the Irish king the Notorious Conor McGregor as he faces his toughest fight to date against Number 5 ranked featherweight Dustin "The Diamond" Poirier in the real main event of this card. Back in July McGregor lit up his hometown of Dublin with a dominating display over Diego Brandao, now he faces Poirier in a clash to move even closer to the title. McGregor is a killer on his feet, his angles and movement are a joy to watch, mixed in with his strong kicking game I feel his accumulation of strikes will wear down Poirier. It's a tough fight for McGregor but I'm confident in this pick.
Bet 2
Cerrone via KO/TKO
Zingano via KO/TKO
McGregor Via KO/TKO
Stake £5 Returns - £194
Now this is a long shot without a doubt, but if you have a few quid kicking about there is worst bets you could throw your money on. Of Conor McGregor's three fights in the UFC I have placed a KO treble including Conor in the bet and twice it has come in so I'm hoping it continues this weekend. Also, if you don't fancy all KO's in these fight you could pick them all to win via decision which will also pay back very nicely.
Bet 3
If you're looking for a single bet to throw money on look no further than either of these two here Donald Cerrone at 5/1 via KO/TKO and Dustin Poirier to win via decision at 13/2 are both great odds and both have a good chance to come in. I can see a lot of people putting this on, especially if you're not a fan of Conor McGregor and I know there are a few about we don't like the Irish man.
Underdog of the card
The Underdog here which jumps out at me is Manny Gamburyan who is making his debut in the 135 pound division if he has had a good weight cut he should be able to overpower Cody Gibson get him to the ground and get a decision victory.
