UFC Fight Night 63 Preview: Mendes v Lamas

By Josh Hall @josh_hall66

After another jaunt to Brazil, the UFC return to good ol' USA with an interesting Fight Night card this weekend from Fairfax, Virginia (cheap pop(!)). Let's take a look!

Carlos Ferreira v Dustin Poirier

Both come into this after a loss last time out, Poirier getting destroyed by Conor McGregor and Ferreira losing narrowly to Beneil Dairush. Although that loss was Ferreira's only blot on his record, Poirier has arguably fought and beat a higher quality of opponent recently and I expect him to win this one comfortably.

Prediction: Poirier by decision

Clay Guida v Robbie Peralta

After only winning two of his last six fights, Guida comes into this bout to show us that there is still the man inside that holds victories over Anthony Pettis AND current lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. Peralta has a similar record coming in but his victories have come mostly via stoppage. Losing to Thiago Tavares last time out was a setback but I think the Californian native has more to give and has impressed me in recent performances.

Prediction: Peralta by decision

Milana Dudieva v Juliana Pena

After a horrific injury suffered in training last year, Pena returns to action against a dangerous Russian in Dudieva. On a three fight win streak, the young Russian will be looking to add another submission victory to her resume. But Pena will be motivated to start moving her way up the title ladder. I'm very much looking forward to this fight.

Prediction: Pena by decision

Michael Chiesa v Mitch Clarke

After losing a war to Joe Lauzon last time, Chiesa looks to get back to doing what he does best: submitting people (eight subs in 11 wins). But Mitch Clarke also has a top submission game, and is currently on a two win streak including submitting Al Iaquinta last time out. I hope for a submission war. But I won't be surprised if we don't hit the mat.

Prediction: Chiesa by submission

Al Iaquinta v Jorge Masvidal

Similarity: both have won six of their last seven. Difference? The last three fights Iaquinta has won by TKO. Masvidal, meanwhile has won his last three by decision. Iaquinta is on a tear right now, crisp striking and looks a real prospect in the division. Masvidal could be in for a short night.

Prediction: Iaquinta by TKO

Chad Mendes v Ricardo Lamas

This will be an intriguing fight. Mendes has just two career losses, both to Jose Aldo. With Team Alpha Males great breakout these last couple of years, Mendes will be looking to prove he's one of the gyms standout fighters. But he's got Ricardo Lamas standing in his way. After losing to Aldo a year ago, Lamas finished the year with wins against Hacran Dias and a beautiful submission of Dennis Bermudez last time out. This could be a frantic one!

Prediction: Mendes by TKO
