Sergio Pettis (12-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is set to meet Ryan Benoit (7-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in a return to the flyweight division at UFC 185 in March. UFC officials announced the new bout today.
Featuring a lightweight title fight between current champ Anthony Pettis and top challenger Rafael dos Anjos, UFC 185 takes place March 14 at Dallas’ American Airlines Center. The evening’s main card airs on pay-per-view.
It is not yet known where the Pettis-Benoit fight will fall on the card.
Pettis in December won his second straight bout with a “Fight of the Night” victory over Matt Hobar at UFC 181. Later that night, Anthony Pettis defended his lightweight title with a second-round submission of Gilbert Melendez. Sergio Pettis suffered the first fight of his pro career a little less than a year ago at UFC on FOX 10 in Chicago, but he rebounded with a decision win over Yaotzin Meza, then the victory over Hobar.
Before signing with the UFC, Pettis fought at flyweight, including a winning RFA’s 125-pound title. But just before he went to the UFC, he moved up to bantamweight, knowing that’s where he’d compete. But after his win over Hobar, he declared his intention to drop back down.
Benoit won five of six bouts before signing with the UFC, including a perfect 4-0 under the Legacy FC banner. His UFC debut came on relatively short notice, and was a profitable one. Although he was submitted by Josh Sampo at the TUF 18 Finale in November 2013, Sampo missed weight for the fight – meaning Benoit got both sides of the “Fight of the Night” bonus for $100,000. He’s been out since then, though, and will return after a 16-month layoff.
