Two UFC Fight Night cards take place this weekend, with one in Australia and the other in Brazil. With some good match ups scheduled, we pick our three ’to watch’.
Michael Bisping (25-6) vs Luke Rockhold (12-2)
This middleweight match up which headlines UFC Sydney tonight has been brewing for a long time. Both fighters have repeatedly called each other out over the past year and now they will finally get to throw down. Bisping is coming fresh off a brutal TKO victory over Cung Le at UFC Macau where as Rockhold is currently riding a two fight win streak with both coming via finish. It’s fair to say there is a lot of anticipation for this fight which is partly down to the level of trash talk there has been with both guys claiming they are going to finish the other. On top of this the winner of the fight certainly gets closer to title contention where as the loser will most definitely find it difficult to get back up to the top. With Bisping being 35 it could be argued that this is his last chance to get that title shot which has evaded him throughout his lengthy UFC career so it’s a case of all or nothing for him come fight night. Rockhold could certainly make his way back to the top if he was to be defeated but an impressive victory would surely put him on the verge of a shot at Chris Weidman’s belt. With both fighters having animosity towards each other and title implications at stake this is certainly going to be the one to watch this weekend.
Ian ‘Uncle Creepy’ McCall (13-4-1) vs John ‘Hands of Stone’ Lineker (24-7)
This match ups pits two of the best flyweights in the UFC against each other as #3 ranked Ian McCall takes on #6 ranked John Lineker. ‘Uncle Creepy’ hasn’t had the best of times so far in his UFC career but it has improved recently as he comes into this fight on a 2 fight winning streak with his last victory coming over Brad Pickett at UFC Dublin. The highly regarded Lineker comes into this bout fresh off of a TKO victory over Alptekin Ozkilic. Both fighters have a lot riding on this fight as McCall is more than likely guaranteed a title shot if he wins and Lineker certainly wouldn’t be far behind in the pecking order either if he picked up the victory. In the past few weeks there has been some back and forth between the two fighters over Twitter which only adds fire to the belly and you can bet both will be looking for the finish especially with a lot at stake.
Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards (8-1) vs Claudio Henrique Da Silva (10-1)
Newly signed Leon Edwards debuts this Saturday against Claudio Da Silva in a fight that could potentially produce fireworks. Edwards fights out of the well renowned UTC gym in Birmingham home to UFC bantamweight Vaughn Lee and many other top UK talents. Before joining the UFC, Edwards was signed to top European promotion BAMMA where he finished all 5 of his opponents and became the BAMMA British welterweight champion. Da Silva is somewhat of a finishing artist himself as eight of his ten wins have been finishes. He last fought to a unanimous decision victory over TUF: Smashes vet Bradley Scott at UFC London. Edwards is highly thought of on the UK scene due to his standout performances with many thinking he has what it takes to be a top fighter in the UFC. Add Da Silva’s finish rate to this fight and we could get a fight of the night from this bout come Saturday night.
