Kingdom MMA brings you its latest Kountermove tournament this weekend, but for any newcomers who have a few questions, here is the essential information. Kountermove is simply fantasy MMA, pick a team of fighters who you think will win and your chosen fighters are awarded points based on strikes, takedowns and rounds won etc.
You can join our Kountermove tournament for UFC Fight Night 53 and be in with a chance to win $25 right here: http://www.kountermove.com/join/33065-kingdommmas-ufc-fight-night-53-nelson-vs-story-game-on-ufc-fight-night-53-nelson-vs-story-T-free/
If you want to win a bit of money but you need some guidance then take a look at Kingdom MMA’s predictions, our ‘favourite five’ below, a few fighters who you may fancy picking.
1. Gunnar Nelson - ($5700) - Gunni (14-0-1) will get his first experience in the UFC main event slot when faces his toughest to date against Rick ‘The Horror’ Story (17-8) in a welterweight bout. Nelson remains undefeated thus far in his professional MMA career, finishing all but one of his UFC bouts via submission. His opponent Story has had a turbulent career in the octagon, however the American is fresh off a submission victory over Leonardo Mafra.
Despite his price tag, Kountermove players will be wise to find a spot for Gunnar Nelson in their team. The Icelandic Jiu-Jitsu fighter is heavily favoured to maintain his winning streak and he has the potential to pick up a lot of points along the way, his relentless ground game and ability to finish fighters will be the deciding factor in this main event showdown.
2. Scott Askham - ($4800) Askham (12-0) heads up the fight pass prelims in a middleweight bout against the hometown fighter Magnus Cedenblad (16-4). Magnus has finished his last two UFC bouts via guillotine choke, whereas the Englishman Askham looks to leave a mark on the division in his UFC debut.
Just one of the Swedes 16 bouts have ended in a decision, so the former BAMMA middleweight champion can expect nothing short of an all out war. However we see the opportunity for Kountermove players to earn some points and learn a bit more about Scott in the process. Askham has been dominant throughout his career so far and he has the ability in abundance to stop fights both standing and on the ground.
3. Nicholas Musoke - ($4800) Nico (16-3-1) will be eager to rebound from his first defeat in eight fights after he came out the wrong side of a decision to welterweight prospect Kelvin Gastelum. His opponent Alexander Yakovlev (21-5-1) will also look to work his way back to the winning track after he fell short against UFC veteran Demian Maia back in May.
Both men have finished the majority of their fights with an even mixture of KO’s and submissions, both men have never been KO’d but they have both suffered a number of submission defeats. The pair of welterweights look to be a perfect match up on paper but we believe it will be Musoke who edges it. The key to this fight will be Musoke’s experience against top competition and his ability to stuff Yakovlev’s sambo technique. Musoke certainly has the potential to deliver high points with a finish.
4. Charles Rosa - ($4200) Featherweight debutant Charles Rosa (9-0) faces a tough battle in his octagon debut when he takes on the German Taekwondo black belt Dennis Siver (21-9). Siver enters the fight as the oddsmakers’ favourite considering his experience with top flight competition such as Cub Swanson and Donald Cerrone. However ‘The Menace’ looks to be on the downside of his career at 35 years of age and after testing positive for hCG in his latest outing.
Making the trip over from CES MMA, Rosa could potentially be the underdog of the night. Fighting out of American Top Team, Rosa has some of the top training partners on offer and his record suggests that he could rapidly become a force to be reckoned with, having stopped every man he has fought, all but one of which came inside the first round.
5. Cathal Pendred - ($5300) Yet another highly-rated talent fighting out of SBG Ireland comes in Cathal ‘The Punisher’ Pendred (14-2). The former Cage Warriors contender takes on Russian fighter Gasan ‘Cobra’ Umalatov (15-3-1) at the Ericcson Globe Arena. Gasan will aim to build on a unanimous win over UFC veteran Paulo Thiago. Whereas Pendred hopes to continue an undefeated streak dating back to December 2010.
Known for his knockout power, Pendred should be able to score plenty of points on the feet against the more grappling based fighter in Umalatov, who has managed to compile seven submission victories in his career. The Russian is 2-2 in his recent fights and the much more consistent Irishman is a heavy favourite to get the job done inside three rounds, Pendred will fit in perfectly to any Kountermove team this weekend if you’re after maximum points.
