Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley vs Marinho Moreira Da Rocha

Daley and Da Rocha squared off in this massive headliner at BAMMA 16 in what may have been Daley’s last fight on British soil for quite some time as he looks to build a career up over in America with Bellator. From the off Daley was looking to assert his explosive striking tagging Da Rocha multiple times. To his credit Da Rocha was as game as they come and didn’t hold back when throwing shots of his own. Although Daley was in control in the opening stages,  there was a sense that he was becoming frustrated that he couldn’t really get his jab off as much he’d like to and Da Rocha was doing a good job of slipping Daley’s renowned left hook. With Da Rocha giving it all his with some big shots it seemed to alert Daley to the task ahead of him which in turn saw him step his own game up. Daley opted to alter his game plan and switched to clinch work which saw him win that battle every time as he was really starting to control Da Rocha landing various strikes inside the clinch. A few head kicks followed from Daley in the 2nd round and the crowd roared him on as they sensed the finish. That would indeed come in the 2nd round as Daley landed a vicious left hook to the body of Da Rocha who dropped down to the canvas and with a few punches on the ground the fight was stopped.

Paul Daley def. Marinho Moreira Da Rocha via TKO (body punch & ground and pound) at 3:40 of Round 2

BAMMA Featherweight world title fight: Tom Duquesnoy (c) vs Ashleigh Grimshaw

In many fans eyes, this fight was the biggest candidate for FOTN honours at BAMMA 16 but in the end it turned out to be the major disappointment of the night as the contest was halted around 11 seconds into the 1st round due to a accidental low blow from Duquesnoy to Grimshaw . Grimshaw had to be stretchered out after a good 10-15 minutes of staying down in the cage and being attended to after the low blow. It was not only a major disappointment for the fans but also for the champion Duquesnoy and Grimshaw who were more than likely going to put on a clinic. I’m sure a lot of people would like to see it re scheduled for the future.

Tom Duquesnoy and Ashleigh Grimshaw ruled a No Contest at 0:11 of Round 1

BAMMA British Welterweight title fight: Leon Edwards (c) vs Shaun Taylor

This British title fight was the fight I was most looking forward to all night and it certainly lived up to the expectations I had. From the opening bell it was all action as Taylor looked to capitalise on Leon Edwards slipping and landing a takedown. From there, Taylor would control a good portion of the 1st round from top position. A pro Edwards crowd roared him on to get back to his feet and he eventually would. From then on, it was all Edwards, landing at will with all sorts of crisp striking coming out of his locker. At one point, Edwards dropped Taylor and walked off believing he had finished the fight but the referee allowed it to continue and Edwards remained calm showing why he is the champion picking his shots and not getting carried away. The finish was always on the horizon for the Birmingham man and it would come in the 3rd round with a devastating one punch knockout. Excellent performance from Leon Edwards who has clearly shown he is ready for the big time.

Leon 'Rocky' Edwards (c) def. Shaun Taylor via TKO (punch) at 3:30 of Round 3

Mike Wootten vs Antoine Gallinaro

This bantamweight match up saw Wootten have his first fight since making it to the semi finals of TUF 18. It was nowhere near the dream start for the Liverpool fighter as he landed himself in some trouble early on in the contest which resulted in one of his eyes being pretty badly damaged. Gallinaro rocked him which subsequently saw Wootten off his back for most of the opening round. Backed with strong support from the crowd, Wootten would eventually get control of the fight and end up in top position throwing everything he could at Gallinaro. Ground & pound and submission attempts followed a Wootten was clearly pushing for the finish which eventually came in the 2nd round as he tapped Gallinaro via a Rear-naked choke with 5 seconds remaining.
